What Not to Do Before Photoshoots

April 23, 2022

We all have an idealized version of how photoshoots should go (blame it on those fashion movies). But at Rainbowfish, we recognize that our clients are real people. And while you do fantastic things daily, we understand that modeling might not be a skill you often tap into. That’s why we try our hardest to make our photoshoots as relaxed, carefree, and fun as possible, even as we try to achieve the aspirational images you had in mind.

Being in the Cebu photography scene for quite some time now, we’ve picked up a thing or two from our brides and grooms. While you may be working with the whole team on the day of the shoot who will help you the best way we can, you can do some things to ensure the best version of you comes out on the day.

Here’s a list of what NOT to do before shoots:

  1. Experiment with new facial products

It’s tempting to over prepare with a skincare routine a beauty vlogger swears by, but you never know how your skin will react to these products, especially if your wedding photoshoot is just days before. Stick to a skincare routine that has worked for you, and supplement with a facial a week earlier. You don’t want to break out now, do you?

  1. Go on a crash diet

Likewise, the pressure of engagement or wedding shoots might make you want to go on some version of a crash diet (you’ve heard them all before: the all-day lemonade, the liquid diet, the 24-hour fast). If you’re not used to it, don’t do it! You can eat fresh and lean and research a specific food (we heard from our brides that ginger and lemon work) that make you look less bloated but never starve. Passing out for the sake of a pretty photo is not cool.

  1. Pop open a bottle one too many times.

Some of our grooms and brides do a binging session just to get over their nerves (we feel you). Unfortunately, alcohol does tend to make your face look bloated, reddish, and puffy. We’re down on drinking a little during the wedding shoot and during the post-shoot celebration, but hold on to the beer and hard liquor before, please! We promise we’ll make the wait worth it.

  1. Overexercise to shed liquid weight

Exercising a day or days before isn’t a miracle cure (as you may have already guessed). Leaning out, as fitness gurus will attest, is a process. If you’re serious about looking your best self during the shoot, we recommend consulting a fitness scientist or that enthusiastic fitness friend. Toning down a week before your wedding photoshoot should just be the finishing touch.

  1. Considering a drastic look.

We know you want to mark the best version of yourself, but absorbing a new identity takes time. We don’t want you to feel self-conscious on the day just because you’re not used to a particular version of yourself, one with makeup or a new hairstyle, perhaps. So, take time to work on that version of yourself you want to embody on the day. Our couples attest it’s the little things that count before the engagement shoot: touching up your roots, cleaning your nails, and grooming your beard. All these enhance your look without making you feel like someone else is in front of the camera.
